Politically speaking, in this country, the media, pollsters, and politicians like to pigeon hole states into RED and BLUE regarding majority voting: RED represents The Republican Party... and BLUE represents the Democratic Party.
When one really gets to thinking who controls this country it is the political parties!
THEY ATTEMPT TO "SHOE-HORN" ALL PEOPLE INTO THEIR RESPECTIVE CAMP...
from primary ballots to accepting their delegates choice for a presidential candidate.
If you are not with "a party" in Massachusetts you are pejoratively referred to as "un-aligned" versus the authentic word, "INDEPENDENT." That's correct. you want to be INDEPENDENT of candidates who YOU do not like and platforms that you cannot accept. YOU WANT TO "MIX AND MATCH," all people are physically, mentally and emotionally complex and different. On some issues, people are at the extreme... others, they are not.

Why Do Purple People Control

Again, look above at 95% purple under the Bell Curves. There are in essence 4 Standard Deviation of PURPLE. Blends starting at the LEFT begin with a greater amount of BLUE; blends starting at the RIGHT have a greater amount of RED.

It is no mistake that we have the BLUE on the LEFT and the RED on the RIGHT. Further it is no mistake that we have left open space on the ends of the Bell Curve. This is so you can see the dynamics of shifting the Bell Curve.
IT IS NOT AS ONE IMAGINES WITH PURPLE PEOPLE. A move to the EXTREME LEFT in essence moves shades of PURPLE to the right... which means as Lefties going further left, and Righties going further right negatively impact their own position.

Many people regard The Wall as a RIGHT wing issue. It is not. THE TRUTH is that the Republicans and Democrats have botched our border security for decades. It has been and remains a bi-partisan SNAFU, except for TRUMP'S determined, leadership effort.

THE WALL - stripped of politics - is also a CENTRAL issue. The U.S.A. has a Sovereign Right to decide who can come into its nation... and how it has to be legally accomplished.

FULLY AUTOMATIC ASSAULT RIFLES AT THAT!
Absolutely "NO" is a common first response!
The answer is understandable
But this response has no context
other than mass shootings
and police shoot-outs.
So... let us start with this plausible coastal context:
You own a boat ... from an inexpensive open fishing boat to a mega - yacht:
You are off-shore... can still see the land (the horizon is 4 mile at sea level in an open boat) so you are still in national waters. Nonetheless, realistically, you are in the "bad-lands" of the U.S.' 19th century untamed west. ( Hmm you muse. As a landlubber, you never thought about the dangers of boating in this way.) You are with your family... your spouse and a couple of children. Another boat rapidly approaches. Your "gut" tells you this is bad news, which in deed it is.
You see 4 rifles and 4 people in the other boat firing into the air... THEY WANT YOU TO STOP. BUT FOR WHAT? To kidnap your children... molest your spouse ... kill all of you.
They are pirates. Your first move has to be the right move.
BUT YOU HAVE NO MOVE!
There's no time to call 911 nor the Coast Guard. Even if there were, their help would be too late.
YOU ARE IN CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER.
IT IS TIME FOR "FLIGHT OR FIGHT." BUT, NEITHER IS AN OPTION.
You are in a slower boat; you have no chance to flee. And, you do not have a weapon other than a flare gun. FACE IT you have no self-defense. Even if you had a bolt-action or semi-automatic rifle, it would not be enough to combat four people.
YOU NEED FIRE-POWER!
YOU NEED A FULLY AUTOMATIC ASSAULT RIFLE
TO PROTECT YOUR FAMILY AND SELF.
OR SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES

So let's get back to shore... You are not on the water. You are on vacation. You and family are at a bucolic, Air B&B country mountain cabin. There is no cell service. There may be no phone service at all. But let's assume there is and that there is basic electricity... both coming from a pole on the street a hundred yards away. You are watching your DVD with the family when the lights go out... as does the phone. You are unknowing of what caused the outages. It could be a car hitting a pole a mile away. "Not to worry," you tell the family. BUT THEN, you see shadowy figures with weapons running across your yard. You are right back in the same water scenario.
YOU ARE IN CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER...
AND AT THE TOTAL WHIM OF THE PEOPLE
WHO ARE ABOUT TO BREAK DOWN
YOUR DOOR.

I could go on with more everyday scenarios... a lonesome road with yahoos coming the other way... a lonely garage parking lot ... and pedestrian underpass designed to provide safe passage across a highway but instead becomes a trap to be sprung when you are half way through.

I could ask you if your favor assault rifles. There's is no room to qualify my question (a favorite trial OR POLLING trick). You might say "NO" because basically you believe that this is a good country and such bad scenarios are rare... besides, they could never happen to you because you don't have a boat.... don't go down dark roads, use parking garages etc. (denying that there are myriad of other scenarios that were not mentioned.)
BUT SENSING THAT YOUR ANSWER WILL BE "NO" AND I WANT "YES" FOR MY POLL,
I re-ask the question in a different way because after presenting my ABOVE scenarios I see your expression BECOME WORRISOME. So, I ask... Is there ANY instance where you could justify the need for a powerful assault rifle to protect oneself? The answer is "YES!" BINGO! Without discussing my polling technique, I write,
"Increasingly, people say "yes" to assault rifles."

X / Y Grids
​
X / Y Grids are an effective way to represent a person position / trait on anything. They are normally represented a two dimensional, but there can be a third dimension. A classic two dimensional grid is to plot concern for task accomplishment against concern for people. High task with no concern for people is a TASKMASTER. Low task concern for task with ultimate concern for people is a PEOPLE PERSON. These are the extremes (the ideologues' positions)
There are some people who can achieve both. The VERY BEST of collegiate football coaches
come to mind. They develop winning teams by developing winning character in players.
Let's take a look
There are actually are two way of representing the X / Y Grind. The most popular is to use the upper right quadrant of the entire X / Y Grid. However since it normally ranges from 0 to 10 on both axis, it is really not possible to show a negative factor. A 1/1 employee is just a bad hire. But what about the employee who is even worse... a gossip... a horrible representative of the company (who will eventually be fired) etc. For this situation the full grid is used to show the negative trait of this person. (See Below)

For example, in a business setting, the 5/5 PERSON is the perfect STAFF employee.
S/he understands the needs of people while understanding the needs of the corporation to make money. His/her primary job is to move the company forward. It may synch with moving his/her career forward, but even if they were to do so, they would most likely move into a similar 5/5 position with perhaps better pay, benefits, management philosophy. 5/5 people are "rocks" around which companies and communities depend for business and cic good.

Clearly, we are not all 5/5s.
Nor should we be to be "invaluable" to the company, team, entity. For example, scoring is the singular focus of an offensive coordinator. "Playing hurt" is not his or her problem. However, this is exactly the problem for the team doctor whose job is to protect the player. Retention benefits are of key importance to the HR department. But fighting against their cost is the concern of the treasurer.
TO THE WALL: Sovereignty, national security, and costs are of major concern to Trump (not the Republicans who have waffled on this matter for decades). He really does not care if the majority of voters think less of him -- or hate him. Conversely, his opponents are either gutless -- such as some Republics - or clueless to the cost and latent dangers such as the Democrats who only see future voters which they cloak in fraudulent "compassion."

Now that we see how we can look graphically at our co-workers... we can now plot anything from seemingly foolish to serious.
Example: The pizza spices vs age. (Perhaps foolish to most people but vitally important to a pizza manufacturer who wants to target a low sodium

Bell Curves
Don't believe one of them...
until you have seen all of them
on a given topic.
With the thoughts of the X/Y grid above, plus the thoughts of the 5/5 person as the average person, it is apparent how 5/5 translates to Bell Curve. In a large established corporation we would expect that through hiring and employees selectively changing job, a "norm" (normal) would develop And because it is a normal, we would expect to find deviation from it. Nonetheless, we would find THE MOST AT 5/5. THIS TRANSLATES TO THE TOP & CENTER OF THE BELL CURVE.
So, using the height of the Bell Curve as the most occurrences from there the bell takes shape. Okay, but that's the mean -- the average. This does not tell us about the high and low flyers, nor does it tell us about compactness of the regular employees around the average. Without getting into the math, with a normal Bell Curve about 68 % of all employees will fall into on calculated standard deviation. Of course if everyone were closer to the average than normal then the bell would be shaped closer to the mean and drop down more swiftly. USING THE HEIGHT OF THE BELL From there as the deviation increase the down curves spread.

There is a Bell Curve for the Wall as it relates to the inherent issues with its presence or lack of presence.
There is also a Bell Curve for President Trump which is skewed to the UNFAVORABLE because the immigration problem and his unfavorable personality are tied together. Add to this that he tied his presidency to the wall in his campaign pledge, he put HIS PROMISE & THE WALL into multiple jeopardy!

Jeopardy 1: The the wall and immigration has been a failure by both parties for the past 50 years.
Jeopardy 2. Donald Trump was his own worse enemy with the majority of people in the election.
Jeopardy 3 He tied The Wall to core campaign pledges making The Wall an extension of himself.

Jeopardy 5: He believed/believes that Twitter is the way around the media. It is not.
Jeopardy 6: His "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) slogan is questionable for many people.
Jeopardy 7: His electing constituents remains loyal, but has not expanded.
Jeopardy 8: His detractors (over 50% of voters) don't want him to succeed because of himself.
Jeopardy 9: His achievement are solid; yet 65% of American think that the U.S. is headed wrong.
Jeopardy 10: Trump has met his toughest opponent, himself. HE MUST CHANGE. CAN HE?

Realistically 95% of the people who vote have some degree of purple in their thinking. Purple People are thinkers... The Pied Piper is a character in a German folk tale popularized in English by Robert Browning in his poem “The Pied Piper of Hamelin.”
In Browning’s version, a piper who rid the town of Hamelin of rats by luring them away with his music and then, when he was not paid
for his services, he lured away its children never to be seen again. The moral of the tale is that cheating people can have unexpected
and dreadful consequences. The term “pied piper” has entered the language in the sense of someone who, by means of personal charm,
entices people to follow him or her, usually to disappointment or misfortune. Browning’s Piper wears a long coat “from heel to head”
which is “half of yellow and half of red.” The coat is what gives him his name. The adjective pied means “of two colors."
